Background-

Riyadh Air opened a new direct route between Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on September 2, flying the connection three times a week aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The launch marks Saudi Arabia’s newest step in building a global aviation network from the ground up.

Bangkok is one of three destinations Riyadh Air is adding this month, expanding its route map from eleven cities to fourteen. The airline, which carried no passengers a year ago, is moving at a deliberate pace with a clear focus on Asia.

Wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Riyadh Air aims to establish the capital as a major global connecting hub alongside established Gulf hubs. The airline launched full commercial operations this year and already operates six 787-9 Dreamliners, with more aircraft on the way.

Each 290-seat Dreamliner features four cabin classes, led by a Business Elite suite with a sliding door and a 32-inch 4K screen, which the airline describes as the largest in any business cabin.

Southeast Asia offers strong leisure and business travel demand, along with an opportunity to connect passengers traveling between Europe and Asia through Riyadh. Bangkok joins Manila and Manchester on this month’s launch list, with Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore among future destinations under consideration.

Riyadh Air has set a target of 22 destinations by March 2027 and more than 100 by 2030, positioning itself for strong growth in a competitive Gulf aviation market alongside Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad.
