Key Background:
Colombia declared a state of health emergency following an outbreak of yellow fever that engulfed the nation. Colombia reported 74 viral infection cases and 34 deaths from January 2024 to date. Yellow fever and Haemagogus are caused by Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes, respectively, and both are of public health concern.
The central-west region of the country, Tolima department, has been affected most severely by this epidemic with up to 22 cases there alone. Its huge population has been generating some level of caution by the health department in addressing the challenge with men and equipment deployment to repel the attack of the disease. Vaccination campaigns have also been accelerated with priority to infection-stricken areas by the Colombian government and operations to eradicate the numbers of mosquitoes by multi-bonus pest control methods.
The declaration of state of emergency by the government illustrates the seriousness and the need for immediate action so as not to have further spreading of the virus. Rapid measures to contain the outbreak were seen as a top priority by Health Minister Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo in a move to mitigate the seriousness of the outbreak. The declaration also called on the people to embrace preventive efforts such as the use of mosquito repellents and avoiding areas where they inhabit.
This epidemic reminds us of the continued threat vector-borne disease continues to pose to tropical and subtropical populations. It reminds us of the worth of having an effective public health infrastructure and the capacity to prepare and implement vaccination and vector control measures rapidly in an attempt to assist in bringing outbreaks into remission.
