Background

Saudi Aramco has started production at the Jafurah Field and launched operations at the Tanajib Gas Plant, marking a major step in its plan to expand gas output and strengthen Saudi Arabia’s energy sector.

The company aims to raise its sales gas production capacity by about 80 percent by 2030 compared to 2021 levels. It targets nearly 6 million barrels of oil equivalent per day from gas and associated liquids. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the expansion could generate additional operating cash flows between $12 billion and $15 billion by 2030, depending on market demand and prices.

President and CEO Amin Al-Nasser said the start of production at Jafurah and the launch of Tanajib are key milestones for the company and the Kingdom’s energy future. He said the gas program will become a major source of profit and support industrial growth.

Aramco began producing unconventional shale gas from Jafurah in December 2025. The field covers 17,000 square kilometers and contains an estimated 229 trillion cubic feet of raw gas and 75 billion barrels of condensate. By 2030, the project plans to produce 2 billion cubic feet of sales gas per day, along with large amounts of ethane and other gas liquids.

The Tanajib Gas Plant, which began operations in December 2025, will reach a processing capacity of 2.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2026. It processes gas from the offshore Marjan and Zuluf fields and supports the Marjan expansion program.

Aramco said the gas expansion will create thousands of jobs, boost energy security and help Saudi Arabia move toward its net-zero emissions target by 2060, while advancing Vision 2030 and economic diversification goals.
