Key Background

The Saudi-Iranian relations were inverted during the past three decades. Traditionally characterized by competition and proxy wars, the two Middle Eastern behemoths have irresistibly moved towards the existence and partnership of one another. The Chinese-brokered 2023 normalization of relations presented a platform for face-to-face diplomatic exchanges.

This nascent Jeddah summit is one of the most high-profile since, and it helps to illustrate Riyadh’s diplomatic preference over confrontation. Saudi Arabia, under its Crown Prince, has been rebranded as a balancer in the Gulf and world, as opposed to merely attempting to dial down tensions but actually facilitating economic and political partnership throughout the Gulf and world.

Saudi Arabia is viewed by Iran as a major force in rebalancing regional security dynamics, particularly in the light of increasing international pressure and reforms. Iran would like to ease its isolation and become more substantively engaged in cooperative regional ventures through positive engagement with Riyadh.

The January Iran-Israel cease-fire pulled back a surprising curtain of possibility. Now, both are keen to catch that wave in building even greater peace, easing tensions, and preserving political settlements—most aggressively in war tinderboxes of Yemen, Syria, and Gaza—this can be the long-promised age of Middle Eastern peace based on diplomacy.
