Background
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has entered into a concession deal with Saudi Global Ports (SGP) for the development, operation and management of the container terminal at the Commercial Port of Jubail via an investment estimated at more than SAR2 billion ($528 million).
This is aimed at expanding the port’s capacity and enhancing efficiency in operations. The agreement forms part of the Kingdom’s broader efforts to enhance trade infrastructure and support economic growth.
Under the deal, SGP will modernise the terminal and upgrade its facilities. The project includes extending the quay to around 1,400 metres, increasing berth depth to 18 metres and deploying additional cargo-handling equipment, including ship-to-shore and rubber-tyred gantry cranes.
The expansion is expected to increase the terminal’s annual container handling capacity to approximately 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The upgraded facility will be able to accommodate larger container vessels while supporting rising trade volumes through the Eastern Province.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Eastern Province Governor Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz and Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh Al-Jasser, who also serves as chairman of Mawani.
Mawani said the project is designed to strengthen Jubail Commercial Port’s position within regional and international shipping networks. It is also expected to improve logistics services for importers and exporters, enhance connectivity across Saudi Global Ports’ terminal network and create new investment opportunities.
The development supports the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aim to establish Saudi Arabia as a leading global logistics and trade hub.
