Background
Wood Nobel Energy has been awarded the FEED contract for the Nakhchivan Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant located in Azerbaijan, supporting the move towards increased production of power and export capacity within the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The FEED contract was awarded by SOCAR Midstream Gas Operations and will serve as the technical design and implementation plan for the construction of the Nakhchivan power plant. This combined cycle plant will use a more effective design as compared to thermal plants through reuse of energy that is normally wasted in such plants.
The project will be implemented in line with the order made by the President of Azerbaijan towards the end of December 2024 detailing the steps to be taken in constructing a new thermal power plant in Nakhchivan to enhance electricity generation and exports.
Wood Nobel Energy, a consortium of the engineering and energy infrastructural capabilities of Wood and the knowledge of the local market by Nobel Energy’s employees, will provide the engineering services according to international technical standards together with local market knowledge. It is expected that the location of the power plant will have some advantages regarding infrastructure that will simplify the project. During the design stage, the consortium will pay particular attention to developing a technically sound facility.
Orkhan Ismayilov, Director of Wood Azerbaijan, described the project as an important addition to the company’s growing portfolio in Azerbaijan, reflecting the value of combining global engineering capability with strong local delivery. He added that Wood Nobel Energy is well placed to support nationally critical infrastructure that strengthens energy security and long-term regional growth.
